– Officials say a fighter jet with the Massachusetts Air National Guard inadvertently dropped flares during a training exercise over southwestern New Hampshire.

WMUR-TV reports officials say the jet flying with the 104th Fighter Wing out of Westfield accidentally released the flares while conducting target intercept training Tuesday morning. A spokeswoman said she didn’t know what caused the flare to be released from the jet and could not say whether it was dropped because of a human error, or a mechanical issue.

Police in Hancock said the flares appeared to explode like fireworks.

Massachusetts Air National Guard officials said the flares exploded before hitting the ground and were of no danger to the public.
