CONCORD, N.H.- Despite strong opposition from Governor Kelly Ayotte, House lawmakers have backed a measure that would double turnpike tolls for motorists without a New Hampshire E-ZPass transponder.
Winning support without debate Thursday on a voice vote, House Speaker Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry, referred Senate Bill 627 to the Ways and Means Committee for further review.
Under the bill the state would raise about $50 million more per year for turnpike projects, Supporters note that all New England states and New York have higher toll rates for those without the E-ZPass transponders in those areas.
