Nashville has been the setting for plenty of movies.
Usually somebody arrives in town with a guitar and dreams of becoming a country star.
This one sounds considerably darker.
Jessica Chastain stars as a reclusive former country superstar in the upcoming movie Heartland, and the first look at the film was released Tuesday.
Chastain plays Misty Jones, a once-famous country singer who has largely disappeared from public life.
Then her niece goes missing.
The niece happens to be an up-and-coming country musician herself.
That pulls Misty out of hiding and sends her searching through what the filmmakers describe as the darker side of Nashville’s music business.
Basically:
Country music meets film noir.
And they’ve brought some real country singers along for the ride.
Jennifer Nettles is in the cast, playing a character named Winnie Jo Lean.
Even more interesting is Carter Faith.
Faith plays Charlie Heart, the missing niece—and the role marks her acting debut.
That’s a pretty big first acting job.
The rest of the cast includes Garrett Hedlund, Ross Lynch, Paul Sparks and John Hawkes.
And Chastain already knows her way around fictional country music.
She previously played Tammy Wynette opposite Michael Shannon’s George Jones in the acclaimed television miniseries George & Tammy.
Chastain says that experience helped her understand the complicated relationship between fame and the country-music business when developing Misty.
There’s another country connection behind the camera.
Writer-director Shana Feste previously directed Country Strong, the 2010 movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw.
For Heartland, though, she’s apparently going much darker.
The movie’s official premise says Misty’s search uncovers a murky Nashville world where nobody—including Misty herself—is quite what they appear to be.
That’s an interesting angle because Nashville’s polished public image has become incredibly familiar.
Broadway.
Cowboy boots.
Bachelorette parties.
Neon signs.
Tour buses.
Heartland apparently wants to turn the camera around and ask what might be happening behind all of it.
And casting actual country performers should give that world at least a little authenticity.
