Manchester Mayor Jay Ruais gave the State of the City address yesterday focusing on housing and saying tough budget discussions lay ahead. Ruais closed out his speech before a standing-room-only crowd at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics with a call to silence the rhetoric in municipal politics and put the focus on results.

Ruais said next week he plans to bring a proposal to city aldermen to fund the city’s new aged-and-infirm shelter drawing from opioid abatement dollars, federal grant dollars, charitable gaming revenue and a “modest city contribution.”

Ruais also said this year he is proposing an investment in a lighting project to illuminate Manchester’s archways along Elm Street and the Gaslight District, and on the West Side along Kelley Street and Rimmon Heights.
