Fans hoping to see a return to Sunnydale will have to keep waiting. The planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is no longer moving forward at Hulu.
The news was confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who shared a video message on Instagram explaining that the streaming platform decided not to proceed with the project, which had been titled Buffy: New Sunnydale. Gellar had been attached to the series both as a star and executive producer, bringing her back to the role of Buffy Summers more than two decades after the original show ended.
In the video, Gellar said she was “really sad” to share the update but wanted fans to hear it directly from her. She also reflected on how much the character still means to her and to the fan community that has supported the series since it first premiered in the late 1990s.
The reboot had some major creative names behind it. The writing team of Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman was set to write and executive produce the project, while Academy Award–winning director Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce.
Despite the disappointment, Gellar reassured fans that her connection to the character hasn’t changed. She ended her message with a familiar callback to Buffy Summers herself, promising that if the apocalypse ever comes, fans can still “beep” her.
Zhao also addressed the cancellation while attending the Oscars, saying she had an incredible experience working with Gellar and the team. She added that their goal had always been to stay true to the original series and its fans, noting that sometimes things simply don’t work out the way projects are planned.
For now, the reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer appears to be officially off the table, leaving fans once again wondering if the iconic vampire slayer will ever return to television in a new form.
