Massive Fire Destroys Manchester Apartment Building Friday Night

Manchester firefighters battled a massive 3-alarm blaze Friday night that tore through a four-story apartment building on Sullivan Street.

Crews were called just before 7:45 p.m. and arrived to find heavy fire on the second and third floors. Within minutes, the fire escalated to a third alarm, bringing in additional manpower and resources from surrounding departments.

According to officials, two people were critically injured after jumping from a third-floor window to escape the flames. Both were transported to the hospital.

Firefighters worked for hours to bring the fire under control, finally knocking down the bulk of the blaze around 10:00 p.m. The building, however, is considered a total loss. Several families were displaced and are receiving support from the American Red Cross and local agencies.

No firefighters were injured, though the building suffered partial collapses, forcing crews to battle parts of the fire from the outside.

The cause of the fire is improper disposal of smoking materials. For a video of Friday nights fire click here (Video Courtesy of Jeffrey Hastings)
